he knows scienceScience in Montessori begins with 3, 4, and 5 year olds exploring the prepared environment with their senses. A first, exploration involves the introduction of the earth, through globes that feature the composition of the earth as Land, Water, and Air. Eventually a distinction is made for living and non-living, and matter consisting of solids, liquids and gasses.

Children at this age sort objects by observable properties such a size, weight, color, shape and texture. They identify and explore objects as solid, liquid and gas. They recognize that solids have a definite shape, that liquids and gases take the shape of the container. The children describe the various ways that objects can move such as straight line, zig-zag, back and forth, round and round, fast and slow.

Our children grow in awareness that animals (including humans) and plants are living things and grow and reproduce and need food, air, sunlight, and water. They differentiate between livng and non-living things according to characteristics they share.

The children identify and describe characteristics of natural materials (e.g. wood, cotton, fur, wool, and human made materials (e.g. styrofoam and plastic)

Students are given preliminary experiences with simple machines that are used for specific purposes such as ramp, wheel, pulley and lever.

Science is integrated across the curriculum. At the elementary level these classifications return as topics for consideration for the Creation Story and the Five Great Lessons. Our program in Kindergarten includes:

Myself and Others
Hands on activities that highlight the similarities and differences of the children.

Land and Water
Hands on exploration of the properties of land and water.

Organisms
Comparisons of goldfish and guppies, pill bugs and sow bugs, observe the metamorphosis of caterpillars and butterflies and moths. Children participate in frequent field trips to Fresh Pond to observe nature in action and to support the creation of environments for organisms in the classroom environment.

Children work in small groups to make observations, record data and draw conclusions based on their discoveries. These small groups actively participate in shared and interactive writing and sketching and story writing based on the work of Martha Horn and Ellen Giacobbe.
