Arboretum Adventure

ArboretumOn Wednesday, October 8th Miss Stacey's and Miss Mahnaz's Upper Elementary students took a trip to the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain. An Arboretum is, in essence, a free tree museum. As a part of the Nature and Me program, the students will be visiting the Arboretum three times this year – it's where they're "adopting" trees. With each visit, there are experiments focused on their particular tree.

ArboretumWhen the children got to the Arboretum, they first spent some time finding their tree based on pictures of leaves and trunks. There was a Redwood, a Magnolia, a Tulip tree, and a Ginko tree. We used the 30x Microviewer, a hand lens, a ruler, and a picture so we could find our trees. Next we took a nature walk and listened to our surroundings. We encountered a small snake and a daddy long legs – and some people tried to pick them up. Along the way we saw a vernal pool, which had gotten very small because of evaporation. Some kids collected many objects. Later on we found a small field with a vine area. All in all, it was a successful day.
