Decomposition Lessons
This past month, as the days get chillier, our Garden Educators (GEs) have been teaching about putting the garden to sleep for the winter and teaching about all that is happening underground. CitySprouts GEs teach all across Boston and Cambridge but featured here is Orchard Gardens, located in Lower Roxbury, where students are learning about worms, fungi, and bacteria that decompose organic material (ie. anything from the garden) underground. Here, Garden Educator Jordan asks students to guess if a flower, banana peel, and plastic bag will decompose inside a buried pumpkin. Then, students will dig the buried pumpkin up in the spring to discover if their scientific predictions were correct. This activity gets everyone involved taking a turn digging a hole. Looking ahead, lessons will be moving inside and be focused on our garden residents, worms and snails.
