In our Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) program, multilingual learners with English proficiency levels 1–2 receive specialized instruction in English from highly qualified SEI teachers. Using curricula and strategies designed to develop academic English, students simultaneously learn grade-level content. The goal of the SEI Newcomer program is to prepare students to acquire the language skills they need to thrive in general education classes.

Let’s take a sneak peek into the SEI classrooms:

Kindergarten Curriculum Focus: Exploring Our Neighborhoods
In our Kindergarten classroom, students have been learning about different neighborhoods in Cambridge through read-aloud slides with pictures. To bring this learning to life, we took a class walk to Fresh Pond Reservation. For our English Language Learners, this experience provides opportunities to connect classroom learning to the real world, practice new vocabulary, and reflect on their understanding through interactive, hands-on experiences.

Grade 1 Classroom Highlights
Our 1st grade SEI students have been busy and having fun! In Math, they’ve explored counting, addition, sorting, and collecting data. In Skills, they’ve practiced letters, sounds, and word building. In ELD, students have shared about themselves, their families, and the fall season. In Social Studies, we’ve been learning about community and how to build one together.

Grade 2 Classroom Highlights
Our 2nd grade SEI students have been busy and having fun! They’ve been reviewing everything from their first unit, solving problems, and showing their thinking in math. Students also had exciting opportunities to role-play as school teachers, open a restaurant, and enjoy reading books.
