johnMeet Our Music Teacher: Mr. John Martha-Reynolds!

Where did you grow up and what brought you to Tobin?
I grew up in Western New York, right on Lake Ontario. I moved to the Boston area to attend New England Conservatory. After graduation, I stuck around because I really enjoyed Boston and there were a lot of opportunities for musicians in this area. I worked for various schools and musical organizations before landing in Cambridge. I taught in three other Cambridge schools, Baldwin, Cambridgeport and Peabody, before moving to Tobin. It’s hard to believe, but this is my tenth year at Tobin!

What is your favorite time of year?
Autumn

Who was your favorite teacher at school and why?
My favorite teacher was (and is) my middle school band teacher, Ms. Peterson. Oddly, when I was in middle school, she wasn’t my favorite. In middle school, I was a good student, but was testing boundaries and she always expected me to be my best. At the time, I didn’t like this – over time, I came to appreciate it. When I was in high school, I would return to chat with her, she became an important mentor to me, and we formed a friendship that lasts to this day. Whenever I am in town, we make time to meet.

Skiing in Aspen or sunning in the tropics?
Definitely sunning in the tropics!

What is a hobby you have outside of school?
I like to travel and push myself to learn new things (recently, I made the curtains that are in my classroom and I rewired a lamp in my house).

Favorite movie?
Home Alone

Dark or milk chocolate?
Depends on the day!
